Real Time Ultrasound Imaging for Core Stability
Retraining and Incontinence Management
- Low back pain causes muscles that stabilise the lower
back to be switched off or turn on at the wrong time
- These muscles are deep in your back (multifidus),
in the deep abdominal wall (transverses abdominus)
and underneath the bladder (the pelvic floor)
- These muscles are meant to be assisted by Pilates
programmes but often it is difficult for the patient
to visualise how to turn these muscle groups on
to make them stronger or to make sure they do not
over contract them when in a class environment where
everyone may have differing ability to do the exercises
- Real Time Ultrasound Imaging is state of the art technology
in the field of core muscle retraining
- The use of an ultrasound enables the patient to see
the core muscles they are trying to contract on a video
screen whilst they are doing the exercise ensuring that
the exercises are done correctly
- Once the patient is confident with these and fully aware
of what level of exercise they are able to perform effectively
they can be integrated into a Clinical Pilates group at the
level that is appropriate for them
